I am on a roll of children’s books! I read this one recently and have decided that everyone who has a soul should also read it. This book was recommended to me by a friend of mine who is dreaming of becoming a children’s author and illustrator. It was well worth the 6 minutes it took me to read. Unicorn Thinks He’s Pretty Great by Bob Shea will (in my world) become a literary classic. Point one, look at the cover:
Poor Goat. He has a nice picket sign, but it won’t get him anywhere when Unicorn has rainbows and cupcake minions. Now what you can’t see about this cover with just a picture is that there is actually glitter on the cupcake’s frosting and on Unicorn’s name. Kids love texture! And so do I!
Unicorn Thinks He’s Pretty Great is about Goat, who is jealous of Unicorn. Goat used to be pretty popular before Unicorn came along. Now, whenever Goat tries to do something, Unicorn (unintentionally, although this fact doesn’t seem to be known by Goat) one-ups him. What, Goat? You made caramel squares? Unicorn has cupcakes. What, Goat? You’re busting a move on the dance floor? Too bad, Unicorn just Michael Jacksoned you right out of the circle. (To watch an awesome video of Goat and Unicorn dancing, click here.)
Poor Goat. And darn Unicorn! He thinks he’s pretty great. Will the two ever get along? You will know as soon as you read the story!
This book is hilarious and full of fun, colorful artwork. Although it might not have the most moral message, it is an entertaining read that I recommend to everyone: child, teenager, or adult.
